Step 1- Recognize Your Need for Forgiveness

He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins
Understand that your sins are spiritual debts to God. Seek God’s pardon daily, knowing that forgiveness is essential for peace and spiritual well-being. 1 John 1:9 – “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Psalms 86:5 KJV For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee. Isaiah 1:18 KJV Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.
: Step 2- Commit to Forgiving Others

“Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another."
Make a conscious decision to forgive those who have wronged you, just as you ask God to forgive you. Colossians 3:13 – “Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.”
Remember, forgiveness is not about merit but about grace—reflecting God’s character in your own actions. Matthew 6:14-15 – “For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.”
Ephesians 4:32 – “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.”
Step 3- View Offenses with Compassion

“Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another."
Choose to see the wrongs done to you as “trespasses” (slips or stumbles), not as malicious attacks. Proverbs 19:11 – “It is to one’s honor to overlook an offense, but every fool is quick to quarrel.” This perspective softens your heart and makes forgiveness easier. 1 Peter 4:8 – “Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.” Colossians 3:13 – “Bear with each other and forgive one another...”
Step 4- Release Grudges and Resentment

“Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another."
Let go of anger, bitterness, and the desire for revenge. Ecclesiastes 7:9 KJV Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools. Ephesians 4:31-32 – “Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger... forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”
Be ready to help, reconcile, and restore relationships with those who have hurt you. Leviticus 19:18 – “Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbor as yourself.”
Romans 12:19 KJV Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.Ephesians 4:26 Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:
Step 5- Pray for a Forgiving Spirit

Ask God to work in your heart, enabling you to forgive sincerely. Psalm 51:10 – “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.”
Recognize that the ability to forgive is evidence of God’s grace within you Ephesians 4:32 – “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”
Step 6- Understand the Consequences
of Unforgiveness

Realize that refusing to forgive others can block your own experience of God’s forgiveness and peace. Matthew 6:14-15 – “For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”
Prayers made in anger or without forgiveness are ineffective and can hinder your spiritual growth. Mark 11:25 – “And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins. Ephesians 4:31,32 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.
Step 7- Practice Forgiveness Daily

Being forgiven

Make forgiveness a regular part of your daily prayers and interactions. Matthew 18:21-22 " … Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven."
Remember, Christ’s mission is to reconcile us to God and to one another; participate in this work by forgiving freely. Colossians 3:12-13 ERV God has chosen you and made you his holy people. He loves you. So your new life should be like this: Show mercy to others. Be kind, humble, gentle, and patient. (13) Don't be angry with each other, but forgive each other. If you feel someone has wronged you, forgive them. Forgive others because the Lord forgave you.
